2 Surprising Inventions That Shaped the Modern #BVM 🫁✨

Bicycles Inspired the Original Prototype 🚲

During the 1953 Copenhagen polio epidemic, Danish anesthetist Dr. Henning Ruben and engineer Dr. Holger Hesse designed the world’s first self-inflating manual resuscitator. To make the bag snap back open automatically without needing electricity or compressed gas, Ruben repurposed bicycle wheel spokes to act as an internal spring mechanism inside the chamber.

The Valve Was Adapted from WWII Scuba Gear 🤿

The non-rebreathing valve that keeps a patient from re-inhaling their own carbon dioxide wasn’t originally invented for resuscitation. Engineers adapted the mechanism from mid-20th-century military rebreathers and underwater scuba diving regulators, turning deep-sea tactical gear into a life-saving airway solution.
